Now this is a long shot, but can you do this:

$ sudo mount -t auto /dev/sda2 /mnt
$ ls -la /mnt
$ sudo umount /mnt
$ sudo grub-mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
$ ls -la /mnt
$ sudo umount /mnt

Hopefully both ls calls are identical....
