Guys, I found the old bug #726692 (which had been even been filed by myself) which contains a fix at least for my hardware (which is not an Asus but a MacBook Pro, see comment #8).
The fix for me is to add this line in xorg.conf: Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" Then log out and in again, and it works for me. Sorry that I did not think of having filed this report before - I did not have to make this change for a long time.
