I tried this as well; here's a snippet from my xorg.conf:

Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "GeForce GTX 660M"
Option "NoLogo" "true"
Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
Needless to say, that doesn't work on the ASUS G75.... Also, this issue still
persists in 12.10 as of today. Sad...
