Here is /var/log/syslog after unsuccessful startup and subsequent
ifdown/ifup cycle.

eth1 for some reason has ip address  169.254.6.29, and no wireless networks 
show up using iwlist scan. 
sudo iwconfig eth1 essid ginger.wireless is allowed, but doesn't actually 
connect to the network.
sudo iwconfig eth1 shows ginger.wireless as the essid, but the mac address of 
the router doesn't show up, neither does any other information regarding the 
router (link quality etc).

after ifdown/ifup all works perfectly.
