I'm using a PC with a Phenom II X4 965 CPU and an ATI Radeon HD 5750
GPU.

if I don't have the proprietary ATI drivers installed, VLC player, by
default, plays choppy and broken audio on any video file.

It is easy to fix this, as you only need to change the Audio output
module under preferences -> audio from 'default' to 'ALSA' and then
under device select 'Analog Front Speakers'.

This should however be working right out of the box.
