This has bothered me for some time (since 12.04), because whereas a
nautilus crash is a transient and abnormal condition, choosing to not
having desktop icons is a legitimate choice. I never use the desktop
folder now, because of this; but this means I have to organize my
ducuments differently, while keeping an omnipresent folder that is
useless...
The mechanism for the panel shadow should be independent of nautilus.
This dependency also means that changing the 'desktop' (more precisely,
root window?) background from the normal 'Appearance' thing (?) doesn't
work (without toggling the desktop icons on and off).
