if of any interest and because I hit the same problem as reported in
this defect after an upgrade from 12.10 to 13.04, I captured the strace
output of lxdm at time of login:

=== before entering login/password:
1294 1 lxdm-binary
1400 1294 \_ /usr/bin/X -background none :0 vt07 -nolisten tcp
1633 1294 \_ /usr/lib/lxdm/lxdm-greeter-gtk
===
strace -o /tmp/strace.lxde.trc -f -p 1294 -p 1400 -p 1633
===
from X window enter login/password
=== after hang:
1294 1 lxdm-binary
1400 1294 \_ /usr/bin/X -background none :0 vt07 -nolisten tcp
2635 1294 \_ lxdm-binary
2636 2635 \_ [PreLogin]
