It seems my last observation was right. I got back to default grub kernel parameters (nothing special) and the only thing I need to do is some waiting in the grub menu (which is quite nasty as I always need to press ESC when grub starts, then wait some time and the continue booting). This gives me a usable system. Whenever I boot without manually halting, graphics is broken. this did not happen with the 3.5 kernel.
