I did some further tests and I can say it's not only a timing issue.
I've chagned the grub config and put a # before GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT in
/etc/default/grub

now every time the menu is shown, but auto-boot fails.

then I raised the timeout from 2 to 7 secodnds, but booting  fails.

the next test I didn't change anything, but when the menu appeared I pressed 
enter to boot the default option instead of letting the 7 seconds pass.
booting *worked*!!!

seems it needs my input to get things done :)
