After digging a bit, I have found that this command works: # echo 2000 > /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/apple_backlight/subsystem/intel_backlight/brightness
I noticed there is also another file /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/apple_backlight/subsystem/apple_backlight/brightness and the value in there changes when I use the brightness keys. Echoing into that file doesn't do anything. So my understanding is that there are two files and the wrong one is used.
