My error, I found the installation CD, U 12.04LTS, and it has the livecd on it, however when I boot it, it will **barely** find the AP which is located 15 feet from here, and I cannot acquire an IP address. Booting the "patched_with_recompiled_driver" I get 3-4 lines on the wlan symbol, and it connects immediately.
