Does this help with a currently supported releases of ubuntu? http://fixedproblem.blogspot.fi/2012/03/creative-x-fi-xtrememusic-ubuntu-1110.html By the way as far as I know, lubuntu comes without pulseaudio, so might be good to test by it just for alsa bugs.
