generic and virtual are the same kernel, the only thing that differs is
whether or not you pull in linux-image-extra-generic, which includes a
bunch more modules:
(base)adconrad@cthulhu:~$ apt-cache show linux-image-virtual | grep ^Depends
Depends: linux-image-3.11.0-6-generic
(base)adconrad@cthulhu:~$ apt-cache show linux-image-generic | grep ^Depends
Depends: linux-image-3.11.0-6-generic, linux-image-extra-3.11.0-6-generic,
linux-firmware
