Latest built wl driver (sta) from broadcom does not cause crash. This is a version issue of the wl driver that is included as the wl package. I followed the instructions in the compile guide and moved the existing wl.ko drivers to test. Checked that my compiled version was the running version and re-ran the original command that caused the kernel to crash. My issue was resolved.
