What I said _will_ work. The problem has been around since Ubuntu Feisty and perhaps even before then. I have to do it all the time when I install again on my laptop (MacBookPro ATI X1600) and with any other ATI as well. And yes, you only have to do it once -- install the restricted driver that is.
