Binary package hint: xscreensaver
The customer has encouter system freeses when using several screen
saver, Antspotlight is one of them.
Here is the describsion:
Problem:System freezes on running xscreensaver antspotlight (and many
others screensaver routines but not all)
System: self assembled ASUS K8V-MX AMD64 Athelon cpu and 512 meg.
Chipset VIA K8M800, VIA VT8237R.
Ubuntu 6.06 fully updated to 2007-8-9
Background: Ubuntu 5.10 runs all sceensavers with no problem. Problem became
apparent when system froze during first attempting to move to 6.06 and
screensaver was invoked during long update down loads. That was a year ago so I
never moved to 6.06 for regular use. I did investigate some aspects of the
fault and discovered that the freezing was repeatable and occurred only on
selected screensaver routines whether they were invoked from xscreensaver or
run directly from a terminal window (/usr/lib/xscreensaver antspotlight).
When run from a terminal window an error message is displayed:
LibGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual Ox22 .... etc
The 5.10 install installs the "vesa" display driver, 6.06 installs "via".
Reconfiguring x.org in 6.06 changes the behavior so that the the screensaver
routines still crash but the system does not freeze.
I can make the system useable by just disabling the screensaver. But I
want to fix it or know what the problem is so that I can have confidence
in the system. I will update to 6.10 - 7.04 if necessary.
I have now reinstalled 6.06 and fully updated. The problem persists. The
output from glxinfo below may give a clue to the cause. A similar
problem is reported in Ubuntu Tech question 3326. Response suggests it
is a bug.
