No, wait.  If I specify AC97 audio when setting up the vm in virt-
manager (by specifying "customize config before install"), I do see the
QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=none in env variable, but kvm is started with -device
AC97,...

Can you please re-try specifying AC97 when creating the VM and see if
you get working sound?
