I was able to determine that my shutdown problem (GUI and ttl) was
caused by bcmwl-kernel-source

If you have a broadcom wireless adapter, you can remove the default
installed with
sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source
Since my MX6454 has a 4311 installed, I installed b43 (b43 linux
wireless)
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
