I have the same problem on my ASUS K52J: i.e. black screen after upgrading my Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. The only way for me to get in my Linux enviroment is to boot with kernel 3.8 and having an external monitor connected. Then my internal screen remains black, but I can 'work' on the monitor...
I also updated the kernel to jsalisbury's 3.12 version. That seemed to help. But instead of getting a black screen, only the mouse appears on the black screen.. (without any possibility to do/access something). So for me, my Ubuntu 13.10 is not fixed yet and I hope this issue will be solved in coming updates.
