Aurosutru, thank you for your comments. Regarding them:
>"Chris, downloading an .iso with the slow EDGE Inet connection available here
>in rural India is not feasible."

Well, it would be feasible, it would just take a while. However, if you
download Xubuntu, it would be a bit smaller, than Ubuntu:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/current/

As well, one may download it if the connection keeps dropping out via a
terminal:
wget -c
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/current/trusty-desktop-amd64.iso

This will resume a dropped connection where it left off so you don't
have to keep starting from scratch.

>"Would running apport with the current Ubuntu version and the new BIOS
be helpful?"

Unfortunately, no.

>"I can probably update the kernel to the latest upstream kernel if that
would be useful too, though the 3.8.0-35 kernel now in the system was
only made available as an auto-upgrade a few days ago."

You are welcome to test the latest repo kernel. However, if it doesn't
work, having tested the latest release would still need to occur.
