I just figures out that the problem is with the option to use HTML5 audio (a google lab option). After disabling this option things work again. Just for completeness, I had enabled this HTML5 option a long time ago, and it only stopped working this morning. There was an software update, which included Thunderbird and lightning updates, but perhaps I overlooked that there was as firefox update as well (?).
