Got that issue on my Ubuntu i386 system:
- unity-greeter is installed by default as expected
- but i'm using gnome-shell which install gdm's packages

- lightdm is choosen in my case, but switching to gdm does resolve that
issue.

So it seems that the ancient unity-greeter bug is back again.

Other sad effects:
- if unity-greeter is uninstalled (so using lightdm-greeter-gtk
1.6.1-0ubuntu2) then 'nouveau" is loaded in low graphic mode
- got garbage colors for the lightdm screen
