Thank you for your reply. Just one question. As I could not use the laptop, I installed ElementaryOS, which is based on Ubuntu 12.04 and everything works fine (apart from an instant crackling noise coming out of the speakers whenever any kind of audio starts). Is there anyway to follow the suggested steps, without having to reinstall Ubuntu? The laptop is used daily in a professional environment and I had to install an OS that would work, after reporting the bug.
