Very interesting! I have deleted the Whisker-menu package and use the 'old' menu. Never looked at it since reporting the bug - but now the icon is there and works!
Tested in a VM has the same effect, bug is gone. Cause of the large quantity of updated packages in the last week it is almost impossible to say, which changed package it was. So for me - close.
