Yes. we were aware of the Unity2D vs Unity3D difference. However, there *is* 3D support on vmware (although sometimes slow) and part of the problem is that also with 3D enabled, Ubuntu 14.04 is slower than with 3D enabled on12.04, although we haven't quantified that yet, and we assumed that any improvements here could also be applied to Unity 3D in software mode....
But as you mention, the problem seems to be more complex due to the fact that many effects are already disabled in software mode...
