I hit this today while upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 as well. Dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu x64. I agree that this needs to be marked critical. There are way too many people being affected by this issue and the number of people is only going to increase! This is not due to some people doing strange tinkering and manual changes. This is a bug with the upgrade and Grub in 14.04!
