I hit this today while upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 as well. I have 3 hard drives, 2 with just data . I first did a standard upgrade with Update manager, then did a compleate reinstall after downloading the 32bit download to a USB drive. Same error "symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found". Then ran Boot Repair from a USB drive it works but I had to reinstall all my Brothers printer and scanner deb files. I recommend to download onto the USB drive Boot Repair first and use a USB installer to install the .iso image to the USB Drive. http://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home After you have Boot Repair on a seperate USB Drive just do a standard upgrade and restart with the Boot Repair USB Drive and repair GRUB
