It is possible to select Try rather than Install on the Live CD, then open a
Ctrl-Alt-T window and invoke the following before starting the installation
process via the icon on the trial desktop:
sudo rmmod mei_me
sudo rmmod mei

After installation has completed, /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mei.conf may be
created as a workaround with these contents (then reboot):
blacklist mei_me
blacklist mei

Not sure how to report this as affecting
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/+source/linux (since linux-lts-
trusty was the only package found but is tracking much less) - please
complete/elaborate.
