DavidBaucum: Can you post the output of dpkg -l nvidia\* | grep ii upload the /var/log/Xorg.0.log along with the output of dmesg right after X fails to start up from the fresh install that failed? This should help narrow down the issue. Can you also indicate which version of Gutsy you were using?
