I have now packaged CUPS with an alternative USB backend which does not use the usblp kernel module. You can download it here:
http://www.linux-foundation.org/~till/tmp/ubuntu/gutsy/cupsys/ Install all packages in the binary/ subdirectory using "sudo dpkg -i ...". Then do sudo rmmod usblp Does CUPS/system-config-printer/gnome-cups-manager see your Brother printer reliably now?
