I have the same problem.
The command $hdparm /dev/hdb (hdb is my cdrom drive) reports:

/dev/hdb:
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  0 (off)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

The only way to make the unit reacting is using the command:
$hdparm -w /dev/hdb

Can anyone else confirm that rebuilding the kernel with pata_amd solve the
problem? Is that problem related to the amd architecture?
