OK - I did a complete reload of my system to Ubuntu Studio. Everything
worked fine, including LyX, but I decided to "upgrade" it and it broke
just like the old one did!!! Thats twice on two different Ubuntu
versions, both of which were more or less clean with respect to TeX and
stuff. I only played with the drivers and audio and stuff (hence moving
to Studio).

Here's what Lyx 2.1 says ...

Due to some error in it, the layout file:

could not be loaded. A default textclass with default
layouts will be used. LyX will not be able to produce
correct output.

--------------------------------------

The layout file:
extbook
could not be found. A default textclass with default
layouts will be used. LyX will not be able to produce
correct output.

----------------------------------------

The module basic has been requested by
this document but has not been found in the list of
available modules. If you recently installed it, you
probably need to reconfigure LyX.

That's 3 dialog boxes of errors.
