I'm closing this bug as invalid as it conflates several issues. I would
ask that you please re-test for these problems on gutsy (where they will
have a chance of being fixed). Thanks for your understanding.
Pts. 1 and 2 'work for me' on a gutsy system, but yes it may well be
hardware-related.
