Well, I tried: $ update-rc.d dbus start 12 2 3 4 5 .
now utopic boots to wallpaper. No unity. Ctrl-Alt-Del gets a window about processes - the window flashes on and off. Any way to undu the update-rc.d dbus start 12 2 3 4 5 This is from 14.04. No big deal to zsync, mkusb, and re-install utopic.
