After the guidance given earlier, I managed to read a log that indicated it might be apic. I used the boot option noapic. It booted the new install! After that I upgraded and now can boot without any extra boot options. Of course the wireless won't work because it is a relatively new Broadcom card (pre-N). Tried the latest ndiswrapper 1.48rc1 and it was a no go. I have a BCM4328 or a BCM4321 - I get both listings.
