Same here! Problem lies in this old video card. What I did: Go to console (Ctrl + Alt + F1), login, then kill gdm, in my case, lightdm:
sudo killall lightdm Then, execute: nvidia-xsettings This will create a basic xorg.conf into /etc/X11. Now, install Gnome Flashback, wich brings two options to start Session: Gnome Flashback (compiz) and Gnome Flashback (Metacity) sudo apt-get install gnome-session-flashback Then, restart gdm, in my case: sudo service lightdm start Now, in login screen, open the little foot in the upper right corner , and choose Gnome Flashback (metacity). This will allow to start a session without compiz efects. You should now be able to start session normally. The problem here is that this old videocard cant handle Opengl and Composite effects in new Xorg and kernels. Im trying hard to finetune my xorg.conf, to see if I can make Compiz works. I will try to downgrade kernel and Xorg too if necessary, but dont expect too much. If your problem was you couldnt start session, this workaround should let you do that. If you are expecting for Compiz to work (remember, Ubuntu desktop and Gnome Flashback (Compiz), both uses Compiz), there are little possibilities... but if I cant get it to work, i will let you know.
