I actually went back to v3.12.30-trusty -- the most recent in the 3.12 line, because I remembered that 14.04, when the problems started, installed v3.13.something. I no longer have record of what was the last working kernel under 13.10, but I remember 3.11 is the first one that did work with this laptop.
