I had this problem a lot on a Lenovo X230Table under 14.04 (and maybe the previous distro) but the latest firmware update (BIOS update) from Lenovo seems to have fixed it. I have not yet tried upgrading to 14.10.
(Incidentally, if I'm allowed to say so here, my machine still fails to shut down sometimes: that is, it reboots instead of shutting down, even with the latest BIOS.
