I changed to the upstream kernel but there was no change in the noted
behavior.
I am not sure if this is relevant but I changed from Ubuntu Desktop to
XBMCbuntu since reporting this issue. The issue is still exactly the
same on XBMCbuntu, no touchpad response and no touchpad listed in the
'cat /proc/bus/input/devices'. The upstream kernel change still produced
the bug.
