Hi, same situation with kernel 3.13.0-43 in Ubuntu 14.04.1, black screen, cannot switch to tty - version before upgrade works OK. 3.16.0-28 - the bug is still here. The new version of kernel 3.13.0-43 is being installed automatically during installation of Ubuntu 14.04 and makes the Ubuntu unusable.
