I did some research and found that Debian started (or at least investigated) a transition for the next version of this package. This means that they rebuild all packages which depend on GLEW (either directly or indirectly) to make sure they still work after the upgrade. Though they are currently in a freeze preparing for their next release, so it looks like transitions has been put on hold for a while.
