Not sure what smartphones you have there but I have a permanent IDLE connection from mine, as on the desktop with Thunderbird. If disabling IDLE in Thunderbird is part of the workaround, then I think IDLE implementation is the problem. I'm not using IDLE for fun, I want to see new messages as they arrive. That's how modern event-driven systems work. Polling is from the 90s.
But since nobody was able to even locate the problem as of today, and given the open secret that Thunderbird is merely in maintenance mode for quite some time, I don't believe anybody is able to fix this issue (and others) without rewriting it all.
