Here I get the hard crashes when the firewire drive offlines. I have a Hitachi 250GB HD inside a enclosure, and it works mostly well when connected by USB. I've seen the drive going offiline (when using usb) when it gets hot, which happened a lot lately with air temperature above 38 every day; I assume that this is the problem when connecting the enclosure using firewire, that it hangs the system solid when there is a unexpected disconnect. No problems at all if I umount then disconnect. My system is a MSI K8T NEO 2 motherboard and a AMD64 3200+ CPU. The onboard firewire adapter is a VIA controller (the chipset is the K8T800). I'm right now using kernel 2.6.15-26-amd64-k8, I'm thinking on upgrading to edgy in a month or so too.
