[UPDATE] I applied the advice which appeared int he earlier referenced
article involving blacklisting the I2C mode of the clickpad, and it
worked. My current kernel version reports.

$ sudo uname -srv
[sudo] password for kevin: 
Linux 3.13.0-49-generic #83-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 10 20:11:33 UTC 2015

The touch screen and the USB-connected mouse continue to be available,
and all gestures and settings in touchpad-indicator work as expected.
This change should be integrated into the stock installation.
