Hello Ryan and Alberts, I figured out what was wrong.
Actually, gnome does start just fine by just running: usr/bin/gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback --disable-acceleration-check The screen resolution did not adjust to the monitor i am using and the menu just happened to be off screen. The mate session seams to adjust automatically. (I did try to start using DESKTOP_SESSION="gnome-fallback" and the log was similar to what i have seen earlier) Many thanks for all your help! It's really appreciated!
