Wrong guess re 37ef01ab... , but there is a difference. After reaching the usual "..Created slice..." message, instead of stalling on the message , the screen goes black then stalls. Still boots on recovery mode only. Must be another or combination of commits. There are 4 or 5 i915 related ones possibly relevant. Hoping the relevant commit is in the updated Ubuntu kernel. It is certainly in the mainline which works here without issue.
