And regarding the BIOS upgrade, my Dell PCs have UEFI and support to upgrade BIOS directly from BIOS using the windows upgrade file when power on. That's why I could upgrade it even I didn't have Windows installed. You might check if you are lucky enough to have that option in your BIOS. And you could also try to use a USB stick to run a temporary Windows image, but it might need some extra work I think.
