Actually, you can run compiz on Xgl on fglrx. I have done it myself, see here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/Xgl However, what surprises me is that Ross says "note that I am NOT using XGL" -- as far as I know there is no way to run AIGLX on fglrx.
