With gnome-boxes 3.16.2-1ubuntu1 in Ubuntu Wily, it looks like this
issue has been resolved. The paths for translation files no longer
contains a variable name, and I cannot find any other traces of it
either. See http://packages.ubuntu.com/wily/amd64/gnome-boxes/filelist
for details.
Since this issue has been fixed in the current development release of
Ubuntu, I'm marking this as Fix Released. Unfortunately I don't know
quite what actually fixed the issue, so I don'αΊ— know how/whether it
could be applied to older releases as well. :/
