The version in trusty has no trace of the syslinux_var code. I suspect
you downgraded without rebooting and the usb-creator-helper dbus service
was still running the broken version from trusty-proposed.
Could you please try after installing the _current_ version from trusty
(0.2.56.3ubuntu0.1) and rebooting?
